Stay Professional, Look Incredible: Jenny Liu
I first reached out to Jenny, creator of the blog stuff-i-love, about six months ago. After admiring her beautiful photos and enjoying her engaging – useful! – posts, I thought she might be able to recommend tips for me starting out. I was struggling, particularly with the photography aspect of things, and didn’t know who to turn to. I was over the moon when she not only responded to my note, but sent me a long, thoughtful email filled with helpful information. Her warmth and insights blew me away. On a recent trip to Vancouver, BC, we had the chance to meet up in person for great conversation and some fun picture taking! Below is a small part of our talk together…plus, since Jenny (and her boyfriend Bahram!) is such an incredible photographer, I’ve indulged in posting more pictures than usual. I hope you enjoy!
I am a well known morning person, but it’s so dark and cold in Vancouver in the winter! How do you get going on workday mornings?
I always start with a cup of earl grey tea and that’s what gets me going. Never coffee! I love earl grey and jasmine green tea. My favorite kinds are Mighty Leaf Organic Earl Grey and Harney & Sons Classic Dragon Pearl Jasmine Tea – I actually blogged about this tea here!
When I first started out, I wore a lot of dress pants and shirts – items you might wear to an interview. But over time, I started dressing more for my body type, more feminine. I became more comfortable looking like a woman instead of trying to hide under a suit!
Where do you get your style inspiration?
Today, I look at style role models like Olivia Palermo…the women who give me inspiration don’t necessarily wear things that would be appropriate for the office, but I love seeing their creativity and how they mix things!
What is the biggest fashion mistake you see in the workplace?
I see so many people – men and women alike – wearing ill-fitting clothing. Things that are too tight or too loose…it makes me sad because so often they are these beautiful women who aren’t celebrating themselves. Simple tailoring is so important and can do so much to help!
Stuart Weitzman highline boots – they are not exactly work appropriate but I want them! They can be paired with jeans, a mini-skirt…they look amazing.
How do you prepare for stressful workplace situations? What is your PowerPose, per se?
I always thank God after a good meeting or before something I am anxious about at work. Praying helps me remember it’s not all up to me and how I do doesn’t define who I am, I’m there with a gifted opportunity. So, if I succeed, it’s not all because of me!
