Italy: Off the Beaten Path in Tropea

Both when I studied abroad in Italy and when I lived there after college, I focused all my travel time within the country. I had so much fun exploring Italy, I didn’t want to leave to travel other places in Europe. And even still, there are so many places I haven’t seen here!

My best friend from Italy has told me for years that Tropea is amazing and I’ve finally had that chance to see it firsthand. Located at the South Western end of the Italy boot in Calabria, Tropea has an amazing 1950s style Dolce Vita feel.

The people are incredibly friendly, the food is fresh and the water of the Mare Tirreno is crystal clear. Meals are based around two local specialties: sweet red onion and hand-caught tuna.

What to know if you go:

Stay at the Hotel Tropis. A bit of a walk from the beach (you have to get your exercise somehow!)

Eat at Tre Fontane Restaurant and order the mixed seafood appetizer. You will thank me.

Enjoy days at Acquamarina Lido, your beach home away from home. There are many options for Lidos, but I loved this one.

Where is your favorite place to visit in Europe? Have you spent time in Calabria or southern Italy?
