If you are like me, you’ve spent the last few weeks admiring images from the fashion shows in places like New York, Milan and Paris. While it’s fun to see glimpses of the collections and live vicariously through the amazing posts from bloggers in attendance, how do the hottest fall trends translate into realistic options for the workplace? How can you look current while also not spending too much on fads that might not last?

Keep the following in mind to enjoy the season’s looks:

1. Know what works for you: not every trend works for everyone. There are some fun  trends –  like cropped culottes –  that look really great on others  but aren’t right for my body type or workplace.

2. Shop sales and don’t be afraid of stores like H&M, Zara – yes, even for workwear. Since they won’t be wardrobe staples, it really isn’t necessary to invest in trendy pieces.

3. But at the same time…hold onto trends you like. They come back! I first wore the cropped sweater look in Italy in 2001. I still have the black Sisley cropped merino sweater I bought then and will wear it as the temperatures fall.

What are your favorite trends for the season?
