I am 100% committed to coffee. It’s one of my favorite parts about getting up most mornings and something I always look forward to. I used to add it in my smoothie, but recently I increased my workout length (with Tracy Anderson Real Time streaming) and realized I needed a pick-me-up before the workout started. That’s when I got hooked on the little cartons of Blue Bottle New Orleans Coffee that are popping up all over the place around here. Single-serving sized and lightly sweetened with just the right amount of whole milk, they quickly became the pinnacle of my morning. I flew through my workouts and felt great…but then I realized that they were filled with sugar calories (not really just lightly sweetened by my usual standards) and noticed how expensive the little guys were (around $4.00 each – adds up 5-7 days a week!). Ugh. So what to do?
Enter my friend Melissa’s recipe for Hemp Milk. This stuff is amazing and revolutionized my morning coffee experience. The milk is rich enough to cut the coffee but it has no sugar (sweetened instead with dates) and is a fraction of the cost to make. Bonus, hemp seeds are incredibly healthy and they give me the boost I need before my workout or heading to meetings. I started making little bottles of the hemp milk and coffee ahead of time…my own personal coffee to go! I call it California Coffee because you don’t get much more California style than using hemp milk. ; ) It’s not the same as the Blue Bottle magic cartons, but it is darn good.
I hope you give these a try – and make the help milk! Coffee drinker or not, it’s great stuff.
1/2 c coffee or 1 serving espresso with 3 tbs water
1/2 c Melissa’s hemp milk (recipe here)
1 sprinkle of cinnamon (optional but I like the warming flavor and the fact that cinnamon is anti-inflammatory)
Mix ingredients. Pour into bottle to store or drink immediately. Enjoy!
